According to Wikipedia, a phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent fear of an object or situation.

The phobia typically results in a rapid onset of fear and is present for more than six months.

I would say it can be an overwhelming and debilitating fear of almost anything, from buttons, spiders, open spaces, crowded spaces, food, heights, flying, the list is endless. The fear may seem silly or ridiculous to others, however, the fear is very real for the person suffering from it and can intensify over time if help is not sought to rectify the problem.

Phobia

It won’t necessarily be something that you’re aware of all the time, but it can dominate your life.

With most phobias, the individual is unable to pinpoint why they feel the way they do, but even if they can pinpoint a reason that they associate with the problem, the feelings intensify over time so that eventually they are unable to match them up with the cause.

It’s in the dissonance of the cause (if you can see one) and the feeling you have that is irrational. You’ll most definitely do anything to avoid what you have a phobia about. For example: – If you have a phobia of flying, you might make a journey by bus or train and boat to avoid the flight, even if it takes you twice or three times as long to get where you want to go.

Has your phobia held you back from doing things you would normally enjoy doing?

In your personal life, you have more control to avoid what you don’t like, but it might not be as easy in your professional life.

How do you explain that you just don’t fly when your employer wants to pay the cheapest method of travel and that is by flying? This is the sort of situation that can pop up in your professional life where your phobia becomes a hindrance to what you want or need to do.
